Lent is a sacred season of prayer, sacrifice, and preparation as we journey toward the joy of Christ’s Resurrection. At Saint Joseph School, one of the most meaningful ways our students live out this season is through the weekly creation of the flowered cross and basket of sacrifices that are presented during the offertory at our Sunday Buddy Masses.

Each Tuesday during Lent, our school community gathers for a special prayer service to reflect on the meaning of the season and the ways we can prepare our hearts for Easter. Together, students and staff are reminded that Lent is a time to grow closer to Jesus through prayer, acts of kindness, and personal sacrifice.

Throughout the week, students are encouraged to offer small sacrifices and perform good deeds as acts of love for Jesus and for others. Then, before the end of the week, each class gathers in the main hallway for a special moment of reflection. Students place written notes of their sacrifices and good deeds into a basket and add a flower to a simple cross.

As the week goes on, the cross slowly begins to bloom—flower by flower—becoming a beautiful symbol of the love, prayers, and sacrifices offered by our students. By the time Buddy Mass arrives, the completed cross and basket are brought forward during the offertory as a heartfelt gift from our school community.

It is always a prayerful and moving tradition, and one that fills us with both reflection and joy. In a special way, it reminds us that even the smallest acts of love and sacrifice, when offered to God, can come together to create something truly beautiful.
