In early February, Saint Joseph School students took part in the beautiful Catholic tradition of the Blessing of the Throats in honor of the Feast of Saint Blaise.

Saint Blaise, a 4th-century bishop and martyr, was known for his deep faith and the miraculous healings attributed to his intercession. Tradition tells us that while imprisoned for his Christian beliefs, he saved a young boy who was choking on a fish bone. Because of this miracle, he is recognized as the patron saint of those suffering from throat illnesses.

During this special observance, two crossed candles are placed gently at the throat as the priest prays:
“Through the intercession of Saint Blaise, bishop and martyr, may God deliver you from ailments of the throat and from every other evil.”

We were especially grateful that Fr. Richard visited Saint Joseph School to bless the throats of our PreK students, ensuring even our youngest learners could participate in this meaningful sacramental. This cherished tradition reminds us of God’s healing presence and the power of faith in our daily lives.
