On Monday, April 28, students from Saint Joseph School in kindergarten through grade 8 gathered at Saint Joseph Basilica to attend a solemn and heartfelt funeral Mass in memory of Pope Francis. The service was a meaningful opportunity for the school community to come together in prayer and reflection.
The 4th Grade students, under the guidance of Sr. Jeanne Marie Akalski, reverently led the Liturgy of the Word, Prayer of the Faithful, and the offertory procession. Their participation added a touching and personal element to the liturgy.
Fr. Gregory, the main celebrant, was joined at the altar by student servers from Saint Joseph School. In his homily, Fr. Gregory encouraged all in attendance not to focus solely on death, but instead to celebrate the life of Pope Francis. He reminded students and parishioners alike that even though the Pope has passed away, he continues to serve God. “Live your life by helping others and serving God,” he said, pointing to the Holy Father’s legacy as a model of humility, simplicity, and service.
Fr. Gregory also acknowledged that for many of the students, this was their first experience with the loss of a Pope. He encouraged them to carry the lessons of Pope Francis’ life into their own: to live with compassion, faith, and purpose.
The Mass was a powerful expression of faith and unity, as the Saint Joseph School and parish community honored a remarkable spiritual leader.
