On Friday, October 3rd, Saint Joseph School students and families gathered to celebrate the Feast of Saint Francis of Assisi — a beloved tradition that honors the patron saint of animals and the environment.
Due to the large turnout this year, the event was held in the school parking lot instead of in front of the Basilica. Associate Pastor Rev. Anthony Kazarnowicz led the blessing, welcoming an array of animals that filled the schoolyard with excitement and wagging tails. Among the guests were baby chickens, ferrets, cats, and many dogs, each receiving a special blessing for health and protection.
Before the blessing, students joined Father Tony in praying:
"Saint Francis of Assisi, patron of all animals, we ask for your blessing on our pets today and to keep them safe from harm and sickness. Protect our pets who provide us with daily companionship and joy. Heavenly Father, Creator of all creatures, big and small, wild and tame, allow us to show respect to all Your animals and be a true friend to our pets. Thank you for allowing our pets to enrich our lives with their friendship and loving ways. Amen."
Each student received a Saint Francis medal and a bookmark with the same beautiful prayer to take home as a reminder of the day's blessing and the joy our pets bring to our lives. The annual celebration remains a heartwarming reminder of the special connection between God's creatures and the Saint Joseph School community.
